Maximal von Neumann subalgebras in type I von Neumann algebras

Let M be a von Neumann algebra. We say a von Neumann subalgebra Nis maximal in M if it is not contained in any proper subalgebras other than itself. In this talk we investigate maximal von Neumann subalgebras and obtain complete description results of such algebras in type I von Neumann algebras. This is done by first describing the maximal subalgebras in L(Z) and B(H), and then lifting to the direct sums and tensor products of such algebras.
